Daniel 9:24 "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy."
- Now I am new at this prophecy kick and have only minor understanding of it (any helpful, biblical input would be appreciated)
First we must understand that the Hebrew word which Gabriel used was "shabua" meaning literally: a seven" ... Some translators used the word week and this is confusing to English readers because when we see the work "week" we think in terms of "seven days." Daniel was a man of wisdom and understanding regarding Israel's history, he clearly understood that Gabriel was referring to "years" not "days" ...
This prophecy is in reference to a 490 year time frame seems to be directed at Israel before the rest of the world, tho I think its obvious that the whole world is living the same timeline. Israel is not on a separate plane of existence from us, but Gabriel was showing Daniel a future for Jerusalem that we may yet be witnessing as we speak for there are still many unbelievers in the great city.
There was more reference in this chapter to a 490 year period before the coming of the Messiah and we should remember that another 70 years after Jesus ascended Jerusalem was again in fallen to war and upheaval ...
We think of the seven year tribulation period in our own terms of time, but consider that if one week equals one year in this prophecy, then it would seem logical that one year could equal an actual period of 385 years. And remember that Gods time is far different from our. We could consider humanities time frame to be about 6000 of our years since the time of Adam and Eve, which is potentially a 6 day period for God. We are approaching "Seven" now. It is also conceivable then that it took perhaps 6 thousand years for God to create (or recreate) the earth after the destruction of the dinosaurs, (this is also why we have no definitive time line for how long the earth was filled with the dinosaurs and was dark and void after their demise) thereby saying he rested for a thousand years with the creation of man.
Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" I believe this to be more literal than we realize ...
The point I am reaching for is we do not know beyond our own limited recollection of prophecy what God has planned for us or when exactly it will come, but I do believe that it is coming and with so many having claimed being in the last days during the past several decades or longer, they could be right, but they were thinking in terms of man's time, not in Gods ...
