“Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.”
“So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.”
John 6:16-21
And the sea arose, swelled, and was tumultuous and raging; the waves mounted up, and tossed the ship to and fro by reason of a great wind that blew; which agitated the waters of the sea, and lifted up the waves;
The storm seems to have arose after they had set sail and were out in the midst of the sea.
Their vessel was a small one, something of a boat: as to sails, if they had any, they could not now use them, because of the storm.
Jesus walking on the sea, thus suspending the laws of gravitation with a manifestation of unlimited power. Jesus did this by His own power; therefore Jesus showed forth his Godhood. In this one miracle we discover His power from these 3 things:
1. Though at a distance from his disciples, he knew their distress.
2. He found them out on the lake, and probably in the midst of darkness.
3. He walked upon the water.
Job, speaking of those things whereby the omnipotence of God was demonstrated, says particularly in Job 9:8, “He walketh upon the waves of the sea:” Implying that this was impossible to anything other than Omnipotence.
And drawing nigh unto the ship; though Mark says, He “would have passed by them” Mark 6:48; that is, He seemed as if He would. But His intention was to come to them and save them from perishing, which Jesus did do.
Jesus says “It is I; be not afraid.” This is the gospel message of peace. Christ’s presence is peace to the soul.
Then once they knew who He was; and especially then He was all the more welcome, as they were in distress; and Jesus was able as they well knew, to help them:
Immediately the ship was at the land where they were headed; which was done, as Nonnus the poet observes, by a divine motion; because not only did the wind cease, but another miracle was performed. The ship was in an instant at the place where they intended to go.
