"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."
"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
Matthew 6:12-15
And forgive us our debts: Sin is represented here under the notion of a debt, and as our sins are many, they are called debts. God made man that he might live to His glory, and gave him a law to walk by. A law which we blindly ignore and instead live under tyrant rule ...
Forgive us: Man has nothing to pay. If his debts are not forgiven, they must stand charged against him forever. Forgiveness, therefore, must come from the free mercy of God in Christ and how strange is it we cannot have the old debt canceled without contracting a new one. The credit is transferred from Justice to Mercy.
While sinners we are in debt to infinite Justice but when pardoned, we are in debt to endless Mercy.
"As we forgive our debtors" It was a principle among the ancient Jews that no man should lie down in his bed without first forgiving those who had offended him.
Our Saviour says we should forgive even if the offense be committed seventy times seven times, Matthew 18:22. Tho we have forgotten that forgiveness MD toleration or acception are two different things.
For if ye forgive men... your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Our Lord makes it a condition of our obtaining forgiveness, that we shall have a merciful and forgiving spirit.
I wanted to carry this message into matters comparing man's law and God's law. Because man's system of law allows for the occasional justice in order to maintain a certain illusion.
However I think I will leave this where it is and let everyone consider this; We have become a society and a church filled malice, anger and surely unforgiveness. We cannot dare to expect God's mercy when we no longer offer it ourselves ...
