"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."
Romans 5:1-5
Therefore being justified by faith - Justification is by faith and the Gentiles have an equal standing with the Jews to salvation by faith.
And now Paul proceeds to show the effects produced in the hearts of the believer by this doctrine. We who are justified have our sins pardoned through faith alone because being sinners, we have no works of righteousness that we can plead.
Faith is shown in our actions and our choices. If we act in accordance with Gods word and choose to live by His word that is because of our faith. If we act against His word and make choices which break His commandments that is rebellion...
We have peace with God - Before we were saved, we were in a state of enmity with God and in rebellion against his authority. But now, being reconciled, we have peace with God.
Reconciliation is found in separating oneself from the world. Instead, today's would be Christians have brought the world into the church. True peace and joy with God is only found by first knowing the anguish and agony of Gods heart. It is not all fun and games to be a Christian ...
Before, while under a sense of the guilt of sin, we had nothing but terror and dismay in our consciences. Now, having our sin forgiven, we have peace in our hearts knowing that our guilt is taken away. Peace is generally the first-fruits of our justification.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ - His death being the sole cause of our reconciliation to God.
By faith - As it is written, The just shall live by faith; Romans 1:17.
Into this grace - Into this favor of reconciliation with God.
Wherein we stand - In which we now stand as a result of being justified.
In hope - Hope is a complex emotion made up of a desire for something and an expectation of obtaining it. When either of these is lacking, there is no hope. When they are in improper proportions, there is no peace.
The glory of God - The glory that God will give to us. The word glory usually means splendor, magnificence and honor. The apostle refers to that honor and dignity which will be given to the redeemed when they are raised up to the full honors of redemption.
They shall triumph in the completion of His work and be freed from sin, pain, and tears. They will be permitted to participate in the full splendors that shall encompass the throne of God in the heavens. Compare Isaiah 60:19-20; Luke 2:9; Revelation 21:22-24; Revelation 22:5.
Christians of this age live as if they are exempt from sin and pain. They do not truly seek the face of God, but seek only that which can benefit themselves here on earth ...
And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also - We not only rejoice in times of prosperity and health but also during trials, tribulations, and afflictions. The word used here refers to all kinds of trials which people are called to endure though it is possible that Paul is referring particularly to the various persecutions and trials which we are called to endure as Christians.
Except most alleged Christians of our day know very little of trials and afflictions. What problems do come their way are many times superficial in nature compared to the true suffering that a follower of Christ would endure ...
Tribulation worketh patience - Endurance under trials without sustaining loss or deterioration. It is a metaphor taken from refining metals. The tribulations through which we pass are the means of exercising and increasing our patience, our tolerance of injuries or persecutions experienced, on account of the Gospel.
In today's Christian society there is little talk of negative experiences or of waiting on God. People have become too reliant on things of the world and carry a "now" attitude ...
Experience, hope - The sense of God's approval fills the soul with hope.
And hope maketh not ashamed - That is, this hope will not be disappointed.
The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts - Our hearts are filled with the love of God and are conscious of His love for us.
The church no longer experiences the love of God. Its all emotionally based today. And people have put "God Approved" labels on many things which God does not approve of ... the church of this era is a force without hope. In a congregation of a thousand it would be fortunate if ten of it's members were accepted into Gods Kingdom.
