"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."
Romans 15:4
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning - This refers to all of the Old Testament scriptures. God intended them to be instruction to not only those generations in which they were first delivered but also for all succeeding generations of mankind.
We have lost touch with the true history of the church. So when that history is presented it is also widely rejected.
We through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope - That through the consolation and comfort which God gives us by His Word, we may have patience and a joyful hope.
Patience is a lost art in the modern age and the joyfulness in today's church is more emotionally based than spiritual. You cannot know the true joy of God without experiencing suffering and the anguish of Gods heart ...
The Scriptures are for our use and benefit as much as they were for those to whom they were first given. The trouble is that in today's church they are not studied. Many times they are not even considered important. Much of the preaching around most scripture is only partially accurate and is spoken in a/fashion to tickle ears. There is a generalized message in most pulpits of this day and a total lack of direct specifics. The worst thing a preacher can do is tell a congregation "you have to decide what is right for you"
